Ease of Cultivation: Catesby’s Pitcher Plant is renowned for its ease of growth, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced plant enthusiasts.

Dormancy: It is advisable to allow this plant to go dormant as part of its natural growth cycle.

Native Habitat: This captivating hybrid species is indigenous to the wet pocosins and peat bogs of Southeastern North America.

Hardiness Zones: Catesby’s Pitcher Plant thrives in zones 5 to 8, with some adaptability to zones 4 and 9.

Characteristics: Catesby’s Pitcher Plant, scientifically known as Sarracenia x catesbaei, is a robust and vigorous grower. It showcases striking yellow-green and orange traps adorned with wide red veins. The hood is broad and flared, featuring ruffles, and is adorned with a rich array of dark red veins and bands. The traps develop their most vibrant colors when basked in full sunlight. During winter, this species often transforms into a captivating deep reddish-purple hue. The pitchers are thick, waxy, and stand upright, forming clumps and expansive colonies, sometimes spanning approximately 2 feet in width. Remarkably, the traps retain their color throughout the winter.

Flowering: Catesby’s Pitcher Plant blooms in early spring, emitting a fragrant scent, and boasts orangey-pink blossoms on 12-inch scapes. These blossoms make their appearance well before the new traps develop. The flower stalks and sepals endure throughout the year, resembling green daffodils.

Native Range: This hybrid species is native to regions where the parent species, S. flava and S. purpurea, overlap, spanning from Virginia to Florida. It exhibits hardiness down to zone 4.

Versatile Usage: Catesby’s Pitcher Plant is an excellent choice for terrariums and backyard bog gardens, extending north into Canada with appropriate winter protection.

Historical Significance: This natural hybrid, S. x catesbaei, was among the first hybrid pitcher plants encountered by Europeans. Its name pays tribute to English naturalist Mark Catesby, who explored the Carolinas in the 1720s.

Plant Characteristics:

  • Height: Typically reaches a height of 6 to 10 inches.
  • Plant Type: Perennial and temperate in nature.
  • Soil: Thrives in upper bog mix or general carnivorous plant mix.
  • Light: Requires bright to partially bright conditions when grown indoors and thrives in full to partial sun when cultivated outdoors.
  • Versatility: Ideal for bog gardens, greenhouses, and indoor cultivation, serving as an exceptional accent plant in terrariums.

I'd hate to blame the plant for its untimely end, as I also need to take responsibility for its care. The plant arrived safe, packaged well, and as healthy as to be expected. It was set in long fiber sphagnum moss without any additives, and set on the windowsill of our sunroom. The instructions called for direct sunlight so it was placed in a window facing the South to catch the morning and afternoon light, directly beneath my Nepenthes Alata, but angled to get more sunlight. The plastic planter provided was placed on a shallow saucer, and the moss was watered every three days to keep the sphagnum from drying. It never recovered from its shipped state. The larger pots started drying and collapsing within 2 weeks. We moved the planter into a tiny ceramic pot to help retain more hydration and placed a stone underneath to keep it high enough to barely touch the water level. The new growth started dying before we moved it out of the sunroom. We placed it in a cooler room near a window that didn't allow as much light, but it never bounced back. The whole plant dried up and died in wet moss within the month. I'll have to make adjustments next time, but this plant just didn't work out in our sunroom.

Thank you for asking about my plants. As you can see, they are doing very well. I've had to pot up the pitcher plant twice and the flytrap once.
