The Spoonleaved Sundew, scientifically referred to as Drosera spatulata, is a petite, perennial carnivorous plant that forms flat, rosette-shaped clusters of red traps adorned with numerous tentacles. Notably, the longest tentacles are situated at the leaf tips and can swiftly ensnare prey in as little as 10 seconds. The leaf coloration often features a scarlet red hue, although it can vary from orangey-green to maroon. This charming tropical plant maintains its traps year-round and exhibits adaptability to a wide range of growing conditions. Nevertheless, it thrives in open, sun-drenched, and marshy settings with peaty soils.

The Spoonleaved Sundew produces pink blossoms on multi-flowered scapes, and typically, several scapes are present simultaneously, with a long-lasting display. While it can bloom at various times throughout the year, it tends to flower more profusely during the summer months. Furthermore, it generously yields seeds that readily germinate in nearby containers, making it an excellent companion plant for your desired species. This adaptable plant can thrive as an advantageous addition to your carnivorous plant collection and has the potential to become a delightful “weed” within it. You can sow its seeds immediately or store them in cool, dry conditions for a year or more. Stressed plants can also regenerate from the rootstock. The Spoonleaved Sundew is an exceptional choice for terrariums, making it a reliable performer for your plant collection, particularly suited for beginners. D. spatulata was first scientifically documented in 1792, and this selection originates from seeds, offering some genetic diversity.

  1. Hi, I potted the sundews I bought in sphagnum moss I previously bought from you.  I recently noticed grass-like growths sprouting. They don’t look like they are sundews.  Maybe something hitch-hiked along with the sundews. Attached are pictures. Any thoughts on what’s growing Reed From Customer Service: It’s just grass.
  2. My 3 Sundew arrived quickly and packaged perfectly. Thank you! Unfortunately, my old eyes aren’t what they used to be and these are so tiny, I can’t tell if they are planted correctly. They don’t seem to be opening up and are still in the ball like when I unwrapped them. I wish you had an unpacking video like my VFT. But it’s not your fault I can’t see them.
  3. Received my 3 sets of spoonleaved sundew in good time. They are healthy and the roots were wrapped up in wet spagnum moss. Looking forward for them to produce dews.
  4. Just got the Spoon leaved Sundews 3 set In the mail today, they arrived looking nice and healthy, Cant wait for them to grow bigger.
  5. These are beautiful sundews. I got them six weeks ago. Since this picture was taken, they’ve grown so much and are really healthy.
  6. My plant came in perfect. Potted it and it’s ready to go. Very happy with my order and will definitely be buying more.
  7. For the most part the plants are fine.  Except for the Sundew.  The Sundew is undefined and quite scrawny in appearance.  I’ve attached a photo. Perhaps this is the norm, but I think not.  I would not have ordered this if I knew it would look like this.
For the most part, the rest of the plants are fine. Well, live and learn.  Perhaps it will grown and be somewhat visible without need for a magnifying glass.
    Thanks, LLoyd
From Staff: That’s what a spoonleafed sundew is supposed to look like…
  8. Plants look amazing! Appreciate the extra nepenthes included, one of them looks insane! Very glad I chose to purchase through you again and got my sister to place and order after seeing these. Thank you!
  9. Hello, I’m sending the pics. I have another question, this next week or so the nighttime temps will be in the 40’s this is too cold for the carnivores to stay outside? Thanks, John G
  10. Here you go. Two plants in a glass vase/terrarium and the other in a bog bowl I set up today. We’re getting some good sunlight so the Sundews are unfurling and flower stems shooting up. Photos below.
  11. Hello, I received the pant today. When I touched them they seem to be a bit hot (more than I thought). They do look a bit sad but I am not sure if it’s due to the travel. I have attached a picture.
  12. Hello, thanks for reaching out. Yes the plants arrived well. They were a little squished, I’m assuming from being boxed for a bit. I got them planted and hopefully they will start to reshape well. I’m excited to give them a good home.
